Overview

Statistics are available to Creators and Administrators at the Session and Folder levels. This documentation will show how to access these statistics and what information is included.

Note: Administrators are able to access Site level statistics. Please refer to Learn about Site Level Statistics for more information.

Prerequisites

Creator access is needed

1. Folder Statistics

1.1. Open the folder for which you want statistics and select the Stats icon, located in the top right corner (Fig. 1).

1.2. This will open the Folder Dashboard page. There will be three charts on this page with statistics about the folder. You can change the time range for these charts using the drop down box located at the top right corner of the page. Options include Any time or the Last 7, 30, or 90 Days. You can also select Custom if you want a customized time range for the report (Fig. 2).

1.3. The first graph listed is Views and Downloads by Day. This graph shows Views and Downloads (number of views and downloads across all videos in the folder), Unique Viewers (number of unique people who have accessed in the folder), and Minutes Delivered (number of minutes streamed and downloaded combined) for the folder and its subfolders (Fig. 3). Note: For video downloads, the entire duration of the video will count towards minutes delivered even if the download fails or is canceled at the last minute.

1.4. The second graph listed is the Subfolder Rollup, which includes a pie chart. This pie chart shows a list of all sub-folders where videos have been viewed, and the percentage of viewing that has happened in each one. Using the drop down menu in the top left of the chart, you can view the total Views and Downloads or Minutes Delivered (Fig. 4).

1.5. The third item is the Top Sessions table. It lists the top video sessions from the folder and can be arranged either alphabetically for Session name, Folder name, Top-Level Folder name and Creator, or by number of Views and Downloads, Minutes Delivered, Average Minutes Delivered, and Unique Viewers (Fig. 5). Note: if you would like statistics on a particular video session listed, select the video session's name.

1.6. There are two ways to download a Folder Statistics report. Within the table for which you'd like a report, select the Download button. The button is located in the top right corner of both the Views and Downloads by Day chart and Top Folders table depending on the report you would like to generate (Fig. 6).

1.7. The other way to download a report is to scroll to the bottom of the Folder Analytics page. Under Download Reports, select which report you would like to download, Views and Downloads by Day, Top Viewers, or User Completion (Fig. 7).

1.8. Once selected, your chosen report should automatically download as a .zip file with a .csv file you can extract.

2. Session Statistics

2.1. Find the session where you want to look at the statistics and hover over it to click on the Stats icon (Fig. 8a). Note: You can also select the Stats icon from the top right corner of a video session that is open in your web browser (Fig. 8b).

2.2. The Session Dashboard page will be displayed, showing statistics for this particular video session. You can change the time range for your report in the drop down box, located at the top right corner of the Session Dashboard page. Options include Any time or the Last 7, 30, or 90 Days. You can also select Custom if you want a customized time range for the report (Fig. 9).

2.3. The first graph listed on the Session Analytics page is Views and Downloads by Day. This graph shows Views and Downloads (number of views and downloads of just this video), Unique Viewers (number of unique people who have accessed this video), and Minutes Delivered (number of minutes streamed and downloaded combined) for this particular video session (Fig. 10). Note: For video downloads, the entire duration of the video will count towards minutes delivered even if the download fails or is canceled at the last minute.

2.4. The second graph listed is the Viewer Engagement. This graph details the Views and Interactions a video session has had as well as the type of interaction (Views, Comments, Notes) and at what point in the video session it occurred (Fig. 11). Please note: If you download the Viewer Engagement spreadsheet (step 2.7.), it will show every interaction by a user, including if they skip ahead or backwards in a video, as separate entries in the spreadsheet. Their starting position in the video will be based on the second mark.

2.5. The third item is the Top Viewers table. It lists the top viewers of the video session and can be arranged alphabetically for Viewer or by number of Views and Downloads, Minutes Delivered, Average Minutes Delivered, Percent Completed, Notes, and Comments (Fig. 12).

2.5.a. Anonymous Viewers: you may see anonymous views listed in your session's statistics (Fig. 12a). Anonymous viewers appear for a few reasons:

Any time a session is viewed by someone who is not logged into Panopto. If the video session is shared publicly on the web or with anyone with the link, viewers can watch without logging in. These views could be coming from anywhere on the web. If you do not want this, go to Share in your session's settings and make it private to only users at your organization. Please note: These anonymous views are not identified by IP address but by their cookie-unique identifier. The relevant cookie is "UserSettings" as outlined in Learn About Panopto's Use of Cookies. A randomly generated user ID is created for these anonymous users. If the cookie was deleted or expired, they used a different browser (including switching to incognito mode) or viewed on a different device then a new cookie may be given in which case be deemed as a new unique viewer.
If a user who had permission to view the video at the time of viewing has their account deleted, they will show as Anonymous in the analytics for the video.
If a video is shared via direct invite/email, this permits someone to view the video without logging in, resulting in the viewer showing up as Anonymous in the analytics.

2.6. There are two ways to download a Session Statistics report. The first is to select the Download button for the report you want to download. The button is located in the top right corner of both the Views and Downloads by Day chart and Top Viewers table (Fig. 13).

2.7. The other way to download a report is to scroll to the bottom of the Session Dashboard page. Under Download Reports, select which report you would like to download, Views and Downloads by Day, Viewer Engagement, or Top Viewers (Fig. 14).

2.8. Once selected, your chosen report should automatically download as a .zip file with a .csv file you can extract.

3. Viewing Types

3.1. There are different viewing types that may appear in statistics reports. These indicate how a video was accessed. The following is a list and explanation of each for your reference.
