Through watching the Art of Storytelling tutorials, you became familiar with the elements that make up a good film. The world the story takes place in, characters, story structure, and film grammar(cinematic language). Now it's time to put this knowledge into action by analyzing some short films. Through analyzing these films you get a better understanding of the factors that make a film successful and also identify the flaws that lead to a film that is not good. Analyzing films helps you significantly when it comes to developing your own ideas for the short film you will pitch to the class.
Submission:
-Review 5 short films, 3 of them being your favorite, and 2 of them not your favorite. Rank them from 1 to 5, 1 being the most favorite and 5 the least favorite. Include a link to the film. Write at least one paragraph review for each film. Short films should not be longer than 10 minutes.
-Review 5 student short films in the same manner. Make sure you indicate that they are student films.
In your reviews, make sure you specify the reasons you think the film is successful or not. Saying I liked the movie because it's a good one is not a review. You need to be able to identify the elements that make it successful. On the other hand, when a film is not good, you can't just say that it's bad by mentioning its flaws. Try to identify the things that are out of place and make suggestions about how the film could have been improved. In your reviews, along with commenting on graphics, animation, and execution of the idea, make sure you also pay attention to the world the story takes place in, characters, story structure, and film grammar(topics from The Art of Storytelling)
We will watch the short films in the class and review them.
